Description

Provision Horticultural Charcoal BioChar is a horticultural charcoal and biochar soil amendment designed to improve soil structure, airflow, and moisture balance in indoor plant mixes, terrariums, and soilless growing media.

Made from carbonized hardwood biomass, this 100% plant-based soil enhancer helps create a healthier, more balanced root environment for a wide range of plants. Its porous, textured structure helps reduce soil compaction, improve aeration, and support better drainage, which makes it a practical ingredient for growers building custom potting blends. It also helps absorb excess moisture and reduce odors, making the growing environment feel cleaner and more stable over time. In enclosed setups such as terrariums and paludariums, that added moisture control can also help reduce the conditions that encourage unwanted bacterial and fungal growth.

Provision Horticultural Charcoal BioChar is a versatile fit for orchid potting mix, cactus soil, succulent soil, bonsai soil, tropical plant soil, aroid mix, and other custom indoor plant blends. It also suits any soilless growing medium where better structure, air space, and moisture control are important. Whether you are refining an existing mix or building one from scratch, this horticultural charcoal adds texture and balance without overwhelming the blend. It is especially useful for growers who want a more open, breathable media profile for roots.

This biochar soil amendment also pairs naturally with many common horticultural ingredients used in custom mixes, including LECA, perlite, moss, sphagnum moss, peat moss, orchid bark, vermiculite, coco coir, coconut chips, worm castings, lava rock, and mycorrhizae. That makes it easy to work into specialty mixes for tropical plants, succulents, cacti, orchids, bonsai, and terrarium builds where drainage, airflow, and moisture retention all need to work together.

As a non-activated charcoal, Provision Horticultural Charcoal BioChar is also well suited for springtail culture. Its porous surface creates a natural habitat where springtails can live, hide, and reproduce, making it a strong fit for bioactive terrariums and enclosure care. For growers looking for a natural hardwood biochar that supports aeration, moisture control, odor reduction, and healthier mix structure across many plant setups, this is a flexible and useful potting mix ingredient.

How To Use

Preparing biochar before use

Soak before use for best results. A minimum soak time of 2 hours is recommended before blending into soil or potting mixes.

Using biochar in containers

For containers, mix 1 part biochar with 5 parts potting soil. This helps improve soil structure, aeration, and moisture balance in potted plants and custom indoor plant mixes.

Using biochar in vegetable gardens and flowerbeds

For vegetable gardens and flowerbeds, use 9 litres of biochar per 100 square feet. Work it into the top 0–15 cm of soil for even distribution. Reapply every two years to help maintain soil quality over time.

Using biochar for tree planting

For trees, mix 1 part biochar with 5 parts soil and place the blend at the bottom of the planting hole before planting. This helps create a well-structured root zone with better airflow and moisture management.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does biochar actually do in soil for plant growth?

Biochar acts like a long-lasting storage and habitat material in the root zone, helping soil hold water and nutrients more evenly while keeping better airflow for roots. It’s important because it can make plants more resilient to watering and feeding swings, and it’s unique because it’s not a fertilizer or compost substitute, but a stable, porous carbon structure that buffers the whole soil environment over time.

Does charcoal help plants grow better in containers?

Charcoal can support better growth by improving root-zone airflow and smoothing moisture and nutrient swings, which helps roots stay active and efficient. It’s unique because it doesn’t feed the plant directly; instead, it buffers the environment around the roots so nutrients and water are used more steadily.
